Aquatic Therapy

“The biggest benefit of aquatic therapy  is that people who are injured, disabled, or otherwise not capable of comfortably or safely performing exercises on land can easily do so in the water.”

Aquatic therapy can begin before land based therapy.  For athletes looking to get back in competition, busy professionals who want to recover from surgery as quickly as possible, or chronic pain sufferer who needs a safe gentle way to become more active and reduce symptoms, water based therapy programs are an obvious choice.

Warm water provides a relaxing and soothing environment for therapy.  Buoyancy reduces the effects of gravity on injured or aching joints and muscles.  Hydrostatic pressure supports and stabilizes the body allowing people with balance deficits to exercise without the fear of falling as well as decreasing pain and improving blood flow to the heart.

The  natural resistance of water can be used for muscle strengthening and increasing  rehabilitation challenge.  Breathing muscles are forced to work harder in the water allowing for natural strengthening that benefits the body long after the therapy session is over.

Aquatic Therapy Can:

  • Decrease pain
  • Reduce swelling
  • Decreased joint stiffness
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Improve range of motion and flexibility
  • Improve balance and coordination
  • Promote early range of motion after injury
  • Initiate gait in a low-impact environment
  • Duplicate land-based movement biomechanics to improve gait patterns more accurately than running in place

  • Build muscle strength
  • Improve cardiovascular endurance
  • Reduce stress and promote relaxation
  • Facilitate weight loss
  • Burn more calories per minute than land exercise
  • Be great environment to perform a wide range of plyometrics
  • Offer the ability to perform exercises in multiple planes of motion
